The US Justice Department have entered the fray in a legal challenge initiated by California Republicans, aiming to block the state's recently passed electoral boundaries.
This court case, submitted to a US district court, challenges the map championed by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was developed in reaction against a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"The state's redistricting scheme represents a brazen power grab that violates civil rights and mocks the democratic process," declared the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have voiced assurance that the redistricting plan will survive court challenges.
"The plaintiffs lost at the ballot box and they are likely to also lose in court," stated a representative for the governor.
Constitutional Challenge
The legal challenge asserts that California's map improperly used racial considerations to significantly advantage Hispanic voters in contravention of the federal constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a substitute to advance political interests, but that is exactly what the state legislature did with the redistricting measure," argued a senior official from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
The legal battle represents the major counterpunch by the Democratic party in the continuing political battle that started with Texas and has extended to various parts of the country.
Unlike other states, where Republican state legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan required voter approval, which it received with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
Wider Consequences
Democrats need to flip just a small number of Republican-held House seats to gain majority of the House of Representatives in next year's congressional elections.
The political group controlling the majority will influence the final years of the current administration, deciding if a GOP-controlled legislature will persist in implementing its agenda or encounter opposition, investigations and possible additional obstacles.
