This marks the conclusion of an iconic period for ongoing anime, with the production studio announcing a revised release plan for One Piece, which has run continuously for over a quarter-century and featured dozens of filler arcs. Commencing in the new year, after the current storyline concludes, the anime will take a three-month hiatus until April, when the next major arc kicks off.
New Release Strategy
From now on, One Piece will produce a pair of cours every year for a cap of two dozen installments. Toei states this will help the anime to “explore further into the core of the universe — incorporating more content, tempo, and timing of the source material.” Yet, producers conclude by hinting at “thrilling developments” during the hiatus period, which means more One Piece content, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, scheduled to debut during this gap.
Previous Hiatus Benefits
The One Piece anime had a half-year pause that began in late 2024 and ended in April 2025. The intermission was for the animators to enhance the visuals and allow the comic to get further ahead to avoid a faster anime pace and repetitive summaries. The anime greatly benefited from this break, and it has been able to deliver viewers with numerous fight scenes, high-quality animation, and less filler than ever before.
Adopting Modern Trends
Although a few summary installments sprouted up during the recent run, the positive effects of this updated approach far surpass the occasional interruption in the story. This also gives the manga, which is currently in the middle of the Elbaph arc, to extend its lead on the anime. According to the news, this may lead to a single installment of the series adapting a single manga chapter, with some alternatively covering one and a half chapters or additional to compensate for scheduling.
It's the end of an era for anime, as the epic saga is the last big series to abandon the old-school way of production, which prioritized being on air for almost the entire year. This explains why iconic series such as Naruto, and of course One Piece have so many side stories, and the standard of the animation can change drastically between one episode and the next. Today, series creation is structured in cours, with a couple at most coming out each year, allowing for improved visuals and more faithfulness to the original work.
