In a notable development ahead of the upcoming national polls, a pair of high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the aftermath of widespread and deadly young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the ouster of the incumbent government.
A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Demands
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to focus on the grievances raised by the younger generation. This promise follows the violent anti-graft unrest that took place in September, which led to considerable loss of life.
"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was signed.
The September revolt was sparked by widespread frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a catalyst for deeper resentment stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of deep-rooted political corruption.
Details of the New Political Partnership
According to the official agreement, the roles for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread discontent with the nation's older political leadership. He has previously held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key player in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He was instrumental in forming the interim government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.
Broader Political Discussions Underway
In a separate event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend held consultations with a number of major political figures. These discussions involved former prime ministers and the heads of rival mainstream parties, marking the first such dialogue since the time of the protests.
Following these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to state that conducting a credible election is a collective responsibility. The message affirmed the government's commitment to ensuring a secure and open atmosphere for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
