Matteo Cancellieri Demonstrates Flashing Moments of Exceptional Talent in Silver Lining for Struggling Lazio

The mood at the Stadio Olimpico was decidedly gloomy this past Saturday. The Biancocelesti found themselves behind against Torino, a team that had conceded ten goals while managing only two goals in their previous five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were concluding their latest protest in a long-running conflict with president Claudio Lotito.

This Year's Efforts Unraveling?

Was the team's progress coming unstitched, or was there ever any cohesion keeping it intact to start with? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri as manager this summer, only for him admitted that the board had failed to disclose the transfer ban they were set to be hit with for financial irregularities. Rumours that his departure was imminent were unfounded, but he did say that Lotito had "misled" him.

The Biancocelesti became as messy in their performances as off the field, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in their other opening fixtures, including the Rome derby. From one game to the next, it has been hard to tell if they're getting better or self-destructing.

Matteo's Surprising Return

One individual continued to smile amid the chaos. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to feature for Lazio this year. He spent the last one with Parma on loan and, early this summer, his owning club were pushing for him to remain there temporarily. The signing restriction necessitated a reconsideration. They were unable to reduce their roster with no new signings.

He signed originally under Sarri's first spell, then a 20-year-old alumnus of Verona's academy. He accumulated 20 matches in the league for Lazio in the 2022-23 season, all but one of those coming off the bench. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, who left at the end of that season, would later accuse Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri would be a star then never playing him."

Uncovering His True Position

It's possible the coach was still trying to work out the exact type of the player's talent. Labeled as a wide forward on arrival, Cancellieri instead found himself the majority of that term as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile as center forward. Across 63 games during spells with Empoli and Parma in the past two years, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
