The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US against five Europeans involved in combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the decision.
The bans were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.
This row threatens to become part of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and European institutions.
